Joseph Franklyn McElroy
Founder of Odyssey of Renewal

Joseph embodies the spirit of transformation and renewal, drawing upon a rich tapestry of personal experiences, professional achievements, and a deep-rooted passion for ritualistic and therapeutic practices. As the founder of Odyssey of Renewal, he brings to the table an eclectic background ranging from technology worthy of millions in investment and art purchased for museum collections to poetry published in unique places and innovative performance art, all fueled by a life marked by profound losses and triumphant recoveries.

Joseph’s approach to teaching within the retreats is deeply empathetic, informed by his own journey through grief, and rejuvenated by his transformative experiences. His workshops are not just sessions; they are heartfelt invitations to explore, heal, and grow.

With Joseph, participants embark on a guided journey that integrates creative expression, the power of community, and the therapeutic benefits of ritual, all set against the backdrop of his own compelling story of loss, love, and renewal.

Odyssey of Renewal workshops are where personal growth meets profound evolution. These sessions combine artistic expression, personal spirituality, scientific insights, and community support to guide you through a holistic transformation.

Identity Boxes Workshop: Echoes of the Self

This workshop’s focus is on exploring and acknowledging the multiple facets of one’s identity, especially in the wake of change. “Echoes” suggests a reverberation of past selves, memories, and experiences that still shape who we are but may need reevaluation or release to embrace new beginnings.

Participants will craft an “Identity Box,” modeled after those of the Kennedy Center, using materials to symbolize different aspects of their selves and stories. This process is therapeutic and introspective, causing a reflection on your past, acknowledging of your present, and a vision of your future. The workshop aims to offer a tangible means of understanding and accepting the complexity of identity, leading to a clearer sense of self and a renewed commitment to your personal growth. Expect to leave this session with a profound artifact of your inner landscape and strategies for ongoing self-exploration.

Waterfalls Workshop: Cascades of Change

This workshop encapsulates the dynamic and transformative journey of embracing unexpected shifts in life, much like the powerful and unstoppable flow of a waterfall. It highlights the natural progression from resistance to acceptance and renewal, paralleling the inevitable and often beautiful changes in our personal landscapes.

Through a blend of a nature walk, visit to a waterfall, reflective writing, and group discussions, this workshop harnesses the power of natural settings to mirror the process of personal transformation. Participants will engage in activities that mimic the journey of water flowing over obstacles, finding new paths, and eventually reaching a state of calm – symbolizing the transition from turmoil to tranquility. This workshop is designed to be both enlightening and enjoyable, offering insights into the dynamics of change and providing practical tools for adapting to new beginnings.
